Scaling & Root Planing

Dentist Serving the O'Fallon Community

Gum disease can develop silently, causing bleeding gums, bad breath, and tooth loss if left untreated. At Brookside Family Dentistry, we offer scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria to stop gum disease from progressing.

If you’ve been diagnosed with gingivitis or early-stage periodontal disease, this non-surgical treatment can help restore your gum health and prevent further damage.

What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment used to treat gingivitis and mild to moderate periodontal disease. It involves two key steps:

  1. Scaling – Removes plaque and tartar buildup from the tooth surface and below the gumline.
  2. Root Planing – Smooths the tooth roots to prevent bacteria from reattaching and to help gums heal and reattach to the teeth.

This treatment is often the first line of defense against progressive gum disease and is performed right in our office by our experienced dental team.

Why Is Scaling & Root Planing Necessary?

Gum disease occurs when plaque and tartar build up around the teeth and gums, leading to inflammation and infection. If left untreated, it can cause:

    • Gum recession (pulling away from the teeth)

    • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)

    • Bleeding or swollen gums

    • Loose teeth

    • Tooth and bone loss

Scaling and root planing removes bacteria and smooths root surfaces to prevent further infection and promote gum healing.

Signs You May Need Scaling & Root Planing

    • Red, swollen, or tender gums

    • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing

    • Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth

    • Gum recession (teeth appearing longer than before)

    • Plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline

    • Tooth sensitivity or pain while eating

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, scaling and root planing may be necessary to stop gum disease in its tracks.

The Scaling & Root Planing Process – What to Expect

Scaling and root planing is a minimally invasive procedure that is usually completed in one to two visits, depending on the severity of the condition.

Step 1: Numbing the Area

A local anesthetic is applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Step 2: Scaling (Removing Plaque & Tartar)

    • Using specialized dental instruments, we gently remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and deep below the gumline.

    • This eliminates the bacteria that contribute to gum disease progression.

Step 3: Root Planing (Smoothing the Roots)

    • The root surfaces of affected teeth are smoothed to remove bacteria and encourage gum reattachment.

    • This helps prevent future tartar buildup and promotes gum healing.

Step 4: Post-Treatment Care & Instructions

    • After the procedure, your gums may feel sore for a few days.

    • We may recommend antibacterial mouth rinses to aid healing.

    • Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor progress and ensure gum health is improving.

Benefits of Scaling & Root Planing

    • Stops gum disease from progressing before it leads to tooth loss

    • Reduces gum inflammation and bleeding

    • Eliminates plaque, tartar, and bacteria below the gumline

    • Promotes gum reattachment to teeth for better stability

    • Helps prevent future dental complications

Scaling and root planing is an effective, non-surgical way to restore healthy gums and prevent further damage.

How to Care for Your Gums After Treatment

After scaling and root planing, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent gum disease from returning. Follow these tips for healthy gums:

    • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste

    • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth

    • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to help control bacteria

    • Avoid smoking and tobacco, which contribute to gum disease

    • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings

By following these simple steps, you can keep your gums healthy and strong for years to come.

Does Scaling & Root Planing Hurt?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, ensuring a pain-free experience. After treatment, you may experience minor gum sensitivity, which usually subsides in a few days.

If you have severe gum disease, we may recommend multiple visits or additional periodontal treatments for the best results.

Pleasant experience per usual. I specifically enjoyed that the Dental Hygienist gave me the "whys" of what was happening and what I can do to prevent the aggressive scraping. I had many questions and she took the time to explain everything.

Had a crown come loose and my dentist for the last 15+ years retired and I needed to find a new one. To my surprise, Dr. John was able to see me the same day I called for an appointment. Everyone at his office in O'Fallon was so polite and professional. Dr. John I definitely is now my new dentist to take care of my teeth in the future. Thanks also to Crystal in the front office and Deja the hygienist for prompt and friendly attention in solving my issue with my crown. I highly recommend Dr. John if you are looking for a new dentist to take care of your teeth.
