How Often Should You Really Visit the Dentist? A Preventive Care Guide for O’Fallon Families

Dentist Serving the O'Fallon Community

At Brookside Family Dentistry, we believe that great oral health starts with preventive care. Dr. Paden John and our team work closely with patients of all ages to help them maintain healthy smiles, avoid unnecessary dental problems, and feel confident about their care.

One of the most common questions we hear from patients is how often they should be visiting the dentist. While many people assume twice a year is enough for everyone, the truth is that dental care is not one-size-fits-all. The right schedule depends on your oral health, your age, and your individual needs.

This guide explains why routine dental visits are important, how often different patients should be seen, and how preventive care at Brookside Family Dentistry helps protect your smile for the long term.

Why Preventive Dental Care Matters

Preventive dental visits are designed to stop problems before they start or catch them early when treatment is simpler and more comfortable. During routine exams and cleanings, Dr. John and our team are able to look for early signs of cavities, gum disease, bite issues, and other concerns that may not yet be causing pain.

Many dental problems develop slowly and quietly. Gum disease, for example, often begins with mild inflammation and bleeding that patients may not notice or may ignore. Cavities can form between teeth or beneath the surface, remaining hidden until they become more serious. Regular dental visits allow these issues to be addressed early, helping patients avoid more complex procedures down the road.

Professional cleanings are also an important part of preventive care. Even with good brushing and flossing habits, plaque and tartar can build up in areas that are difficult to reach at home. Removing this buildup helps protect the teeth and gums and lowers the risk of infection and decay.

Preventive care is also closely connected to overall health. Research continues to show links between oral health and conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Keeping your mouth healthy is an important part of maintaining your overall well-being.

How Often Should Most Adults Visit the Dentist?

For many adults, visiting the dentist every six months is a good starting point. These routine visits allow enough time to remove plaque and tartar, evaluate gum health, and monitor any changes in the teeth or bite.

However, Dr. Paden John takes an individualized approach to care. Some patients may need to be seen more frequently depending on their oral health history. Adults who have gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, dry mouth, or certain medical conditions may benefit from cleanings every three to four months. Tobacco use and high stress levels can also increase the risk of dental issues and may require closer monitoring.

At Brookside Family Dentistry, we evaluate each patient’s needs and recommend a schedule that supports long-term oral health rather than following a fixed routine for everyone.

Dental Visit Recommendations for Children and Teens

Children benefit greatly from early and consistent dental care. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. These early visits help children become comfortable in the dental environment and allow Dr. John to monitor growth and development from the start.

As children grow, regular dental visits help prevent cavities, guide healthy habits, and ensure that teeth and jaws are developing properly. Preventive treatments such as fluoride applications and dental sealants can provide added protection for young teeth that are more prone to decay.

Teenagers often face new challenges related to orthodontic treatment, busy schedules, and changing oral hygiene habits. Routine checkups help keep their smiles healthy during this stage and reduce the risk of long-term dental problems.

Dental Care for Seniors

Oral health needs can change with age. Seniors may experience gum recession, increased tooth sensitivity, dry mouth caused by medications, or wear on existing dental work. These factors can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Depending on their oral health and medical history, seniors may benefit from dental visits every four to six months. Regular exams allow Dr. John to monitor changes, maintain comfort, and help patients preserve their natural teeth whenever possible.

What Happens During a Preventive Dental Visit

Routine dental visits at Brookside Family Dentistry are thorough, gentle, and focused on patient comfort. Each visit typically includes a comprehensive exam where Dr. John evaluates the teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues of the mouth. Digital X-rays may be taken when necessary to identify issues that are not visible during a visual exam, such as cavities between teeth or signs of bone loss.

Professional cleanings are performed by our experienced hygienists, who carefully remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. Teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and create a smoother surface that helps prevent plaque buildup.

Oral cancer screenings are also part of routine care. These screenings are quick and painless but play an important role in identifying abnormalities early, when treatment is most effective.

Each visit also includes personalized recommendations. Our team takes time to answer questions, discuss home care habits, and provide guidance that supports each patient’s specific needs.

How Routine Visits Help Prevent Bigger Dental Problems

Skipping regular dental visits can allow small issues to become serious. A minor cavity that could have been treated with a simple filling may eventually require a crown or root canal. Early gum inflammation can progress into periodontal disease if left untreated.

Preventive care helps patients avoid unexpected dental emergencies, pain, and higher treatment costs. By maintaining regular visits, many patients are able to preserve their natural teeth and enjoy better oral health over time.

When to Schedule a Visit Sooner

Even if you are on a regular schedule, it is important to contact the office if you notice symptoms such as bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity, swelling, loose teeth, or sores that do not heal. These signs may indicate underlying issues that need prompt attention.

Pleasant experience per usual. I specifically enjoyed that the Dental Hygienist gave me the "whys" of what was happening and what I can do to prevent the aggressive scraping. I had many questions and she took the time to explain everything.

Had a crown come loose and my dentist for the last 15+ years retired and I needed to find a new one. To my surprise, Dr. John was able to see me the same day I called for an appointment. Everyone at his office in O'Fallon was so polite and professional. Dr. John I definitely is now my new dentist to take care of my teeth in the future. Thanks also to Crystal in the front office and Deja the hygienist for prompt and friendly attention in solving my issue with my crown. I highly recommend Dr. John if you are looking for a new dentist to take care of your teeth.
