Why Do Teeth Need to Be Extracted?

A tooth extraction may be necessary if a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or causing overcrowding. Common reasons for extractions include:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored with a filling or crown
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or infection
  • Broken or fractured teeth that cannot be repaired
  • Advanced gum disease that has weakened the bone supporting the tooth
  • Overcrowding or orthodontic needs (removing a tooth to allow proper alignment)
  • Abscessed teeth that have not responded to root canal therapy

If an extraction is needed, we will walk you through the entire process to ensure you feel comfortable and confident about your treatment.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth (third molars) typically emerge between ages 17-25, but many people don’t have enough space in their mouths for them to come in properly. This can lead to impacted wisdom teeth, which can cause pain, infection, and misalignment of other teeth.

Signs You May Need Wisdom Teeth Removal

    • Jaw pain or swelling in the back of the mouth

    • Difficulty opening your mouth fully

    • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums near the wisdom teeth

    • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste

    • Crowding or shifting of other teeth

If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can cause infection, cysts, or damage to nearby teeth. Our team will evaluate your wisdom teeth and recommend removal if necessary.

The Tooth Extraction Process – What to Expect

Tooth extractions are routine procedures performed with local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience. Depending on your needs, we may also offer sedation options for additional comfort.

Step 1: Numbing the Area

    • A local anesthetic is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding gum tissue.

    • If you prefer, sedation options (such as nitrous oxide or IV sedation) may be available.

Step 2: Loosening & Removing the Tooth

    • Simple Extractions: If the tooth is fully erupted, it is gently loosened and removed with specialized instruments.

    • Surgical Extractions: If the tooth is impacted or broken, a small incision is made in the gum, and the tooth may be removed in sections for easier extraction.

Step 3: Closing the Extraction Site

    • If necessary, dissolvable stitches may be placed to aid healing.

    • A gauze pad is applied to control bleeding and promote clot formation.

Recovery & Aftercare Instructions

Proper care after an extraction is essential for a smooth recovery. Follow these guidelines to promote healing and prevent complications:

What to Expect After Extraction

Mild swelling and discomfort for the first 24-48 hours

Minor bleeding, which should subside within a few hours

Soreness in the jaw, especially after wisdom tooth removal

Post-Extraction Care Instructions

    • Bite on gauze – Keep it in place for 30-45 minutes and change as needed.

    • Apply ice packs – Use for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off to reduce swelling.

    • Rest & avoid strenuous activity – Avoid bending over or heavy lifting for at least 24 hours.

    • Eat soft foods – Stick to gelatin, yogurt, mashed potatoes, pudding, ice cream, and soup for the first few days.

    • Do NOT use a straw or smoke – The suction motion can disrupt healing and cause dry socket.

    • Keep the area clean – Gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours (but do not spit forcefully).

If you experience prolonged bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection, contact our office immediately.

How Long Does It Take to Heal After a Tooth Extraction?

Healing time varies, but most patients recover within 7-10 days. Wisdom teeth extractions or surgical extractions may take slightly longer.

    • Swelling peaks at 48 hours, then gradually decreases.

    • Soft foods should be eaten for about 3-5 days.

    • Normal activities can usually resume within 24-48 hours.

Following proper aftercare instructions ensures a smooth, comfortable recovery.

What Is a Dry Socket & How Can I Prevent It?

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms after an extraction dislodges too soon, exposing the bone. This can cause severe pain and delay healing.

Ways to Prevent Dry Socket

    • Do NOT use straws, smoke, or spit forcefully for the first few days.

    • Avoid excessive rinsing within the first 24 hours.

    • Follow all post-op care instructions carefully.

If you develop severe pain a few days after extraction, contact us immediately for treatment.
