Dental Implants vs. Bridges: Which Tooth Replacement Option Is Right for You?

Dentist Serving the O'Fallon Community

Missing a tooth is more than just a cosmetic concern. Whether the tooth was lost due to decay, gum disease, or injury, leaving the space untreated can affect how you eat, speak, and smile – and it can lead to long-term oral health problems.

If you’re missing one or more teeth, two of the most common treatment options are dental implants and dental bridges. Both are effective solutions, but they work in very different ways. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision that supports your long-term oral health.

At Brookside Family Dentistry, we help patients throughout O’Fallon, MO explore tooth replacement options that fit their needs, goals, and budget. This guide explains how dental implants and bridges work, the pros and cons of each, and how to determine which option may be right for you.

Why Replacing a Missing Tooth Matters

When a tooth is lost, the effects go beyond the visible gap in your smile. Without replacement, you may experience:

  • Shifting of nearby teeth into the open space
  • Bite misalignment and uneven chewing pressure
  • Increased risk of cavities and gum disease
  • Jawbone deterioration over time
  • Difficulty chewing or speaking clearly
  • Changes in facial shape

Replacing missing teeth helps maintain proper alignment, preserve jawbone health, and protect your remaining teeth.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth (called a pontic) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Those supporting teeth are reshaped and covered with crowns to hold the bridge securely in place.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Fixed, non-removable solution
  • Restores chewing and speaking ability
  • Typically completed in a shorter time frame
  • Does not require surgery
  • Often more affordable upfront

Considerations with Dental Bridges

  • Requires reshaping healthy neighboring teeth
  • Does not replace the tooth root
  • Does not prevent jawbone loss in the missing tooth area
  • Supporting teeth may be at higher risk for decay over time

Dental bridges can be an excellent option for patients who want a reliable, fixed solution and have strong, healthy teeth next to the missing space.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant replaces both the tooth and its root. It consists of a small titanium post that is placed into the jawbone, where it integrates with the bone over time. Once healed, a custom crown is attached to the implant to restore appearance and function.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Replaces the tooth root and crown
  • Helps preserve jawbone density
  • Does not affect surrounding healthy teeth
  • Feels and functions like a natural tooth
  • Designed to last many years with proper care

Considerations with Dental Implants

  • Requires a surgical procedure
  • Longer treatment timeline due to healing
  • Higher upfront cost compared to bridges
  • Adequate bone density is required

Dental implants are often considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they restore the entire tooth structure and provide long-term stability.

Dental Implants vs. Bridges: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Longevity

Implants: Designed for long-term use; crowns may need replacement due to wear

Bridges: Typically last 10 to 15 years with good care

Impact on Neighboring Teeth

Implants: Do not involve adjacent teeth

Bridges: Require reshaping of nearby healthy teeth

Jawbone Health

Implants: Help prevent bone loss by stimulating the jaw

Bridges: Do not address bone loss beneath the missing tooth

Comfort and Function

Implants: Feel and function most like natural teeth

Bridges: Provide stable function but rely on adjacent teeth for support

Treatment Time

Implants: Several months due to healing and integration

Bridges: Usually completed in a few weeks

Cost

Implants: Higher initial investment, often lower long-term maintenance

Bridges: Lower upfront cost but may require replacement over time

Which Option Is Right for You?

Choosing between a dental implant and a bridge depends on several personal factors, including:

  • Your Oral Health: Healthy gums and sufficient jawbone are important for implants. Gum disease or bone loss may need to be addressed first.
  • Location of the Missing Tooth: Some areas of the mouth may be better suited for one option over the other based on bite forces and aesthetics.
  • Condition of Nearby Teeth: If adjacent teeth already need crowns, a bridge may be a practical solution. If neighboring teeth are healthy, an implant may help preserve them.
  • Timeline: If you need a quicker solution and want to avoid surgery, a bridge may be preferable.
  • Budget and Insurance Coverage: While implants have a higher upfront cost, they often provide greater long-term value. Your dental team can review financing and insurance options.

A personalized consultation is the best way to determine which option fits your needs.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace a Missing Tooth?

Delaying treatment can lead to complications such as:

  • Teeth shifting into the empty space
  • Increased wear on remaining teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or speaking
  • Bone loss in the jaw
  • Higher risk of future dental work

Replacing a missing tooth sooner rather than later helps protect your oral health and prevents more complex issues.

Pleasant experience per usual. I specifically enjoyed that the Dental Hygienist gave me the "whys" of what was happening and what I can do to prevent the aggressive scraping. I had many questions and she took the time to explain everything.

Had a crown come loose and my dentist for the last 15+ years retired and I needed to find a new one. To my surprise, Dr. John was able to see me the same day I called for an appointment. Everyone at his office in O'Fallon was so polite and professional. Dr. John I definitely is now my new dentist to take care of my teeth in the future. Thanks also to Crystal in the front office and Deja the hygienist for prompt and friendly attention in solving my issue with my crown. I highly recommend Dr. John if you are looking for a new dentist to take care of your teeth.
